He came to the UK in July 2000 and passed the Membership of the Royal College of Ireland (MRCPI) exam in November 2000. He trained in several Hospitals in the UK.
In March 2005, he was admitted as a Collegiate Member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (RCPSG).
He finished his Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) in Diabetes / Endocrinology & Medicine in October 2008. He then developed the Diabetes Service in the Southern sector of the Western Trust based at the SWAH with outreach service at Tyrone County Hospital Diabetes Centre.
Dr. Helmy is SCOPE certified (Specialist Certification of Obesity Professional Education) by the International Association for the Study of Obesity (World Obesity Federation) in 2011.
In 2013, Dr. Helmy was nominated for Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.
He is a member of various professional organizations (British Medical Association, Diabetes UK, Society for Endocrinology, Association for the Study of Obesity, Association of British Clinical Diabetologists ABCD & European Association for the Study of Diabetes).
