He has acquired various subspecialty experiences in nephrology during his current position and his previous positions at multiple prestigious hospitals at the NHS foundation.

Dr Ponnusamy has always paid special attention to the improvement of the quality of care. He introduced the term "Code Red" to help recognise the need to respond to acute unwell adults in a timely fashion. As a response to this triage system, the cardiac arrest rate was reduced by 70 percent. This project was adapted across the trust and is still successfully implemented.

He is an examiner for the MRCP PACES examination at the Royal College of Physicians, an examiner for PLAB (exam undertaken to qualify overseas Doctors) by the General Medical Council and an OSCE examiner for medical students of the University of Manchester.
