With over 40 years of experience, Prof. Georgiou is currently the Director of the Unit of Medical Genetics at Ioannina University Hospital and Human Reproductive Genetics Research Laboratory. Throughout his career, he received training in different areas of medical genetics at specialized associations across Europe and UK. He has contributed to 240 research projects and got a total of 23 research grants.

    Ioannis A. Georgiou is a Professor of Medical Genetics and Clinical Embryology at the University of Ioannina in Greece. He earned his Ph.D. degree in medical genetics in 1991. He is currently the Director of the Unit of Medical Genetics at Ioannina University Hospital and Human Reproductive Genetics Research Laboratory.

    He received special training at the European School of Medical Genetics, the Centre for Assisted Reproduction at the University of Edinburgh, and the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology. He was a Research Associate at the Departments of Reproductive Biology and Medical Genetics at the University of Brussels, for research and training in the Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis with biopsy and genetic analysis of blastomeres of embryos at the eight cells stage.

    Early in his career, he received training in the Genetics of Thalassemia and Hemoglobinopathies, at the Centre of Mediterranean Anaemia, Athens.

    He is the author of a substantial body of research over a distinguished career with 240 publications in peer-reviewed journals and over 100 abstracts in international meetings. His current research interests include the genetics of human reproduction and the genetics of single-gene and multifactorial disorders.
