Professor Antonio Giacomo Rizzo is a highly experienced surgeon and academic, with over three decades of expertise in general, oncological, minimally invasive, and day-surgery procedures. Since November 2005, he has served as Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Messina and as Medical Director of Oncologic Surgery at University Hospital “G. Martino,” with over 3,000 surgical operations to his name. He has maintained continuous teaching responsibilities since 2004 in core courses such as Emergency Surgery, Day Surgery, Pathophysiology, and Surgical Methodology, in addition to tutoring and assessing candidates for Italy’s national surgical licensing exams. A prolific researcher and humanitarian leader, he has published approximately 100 peer-reviewed articles and currently heads the HealthSud Medical Foundation, promoting cancer prevention, education, and training in Côte d’Ivoire.
Professor Antonio Giacomo Rizzo is a distinguished surgeon, academic, and researcher with over three decades of experience in general, oncological, hepatobiliary, gastrointestinal, thyroid, breast, proctological, and abdominal wall surgery—including minimally invasive and day-surgery approaches. Since November 2005, he has served as Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Messina and holds the position of Medical Director of the Department of Oncologic Surgery at University Hospital “G. Martino.” He is also a confirmed researcher in general surgery at the University, and has received advanced training in robotic, laparoscopic, and nano-surgical techniques at leading institutions in the USA and Germany.
Over his long career, Professor Rizzo has been the primary operator in more than 3,000 surgical procedures across a broad spectrum of specialties. His surgical expertise is complemented by his fluency in English and Italian, enabling him to effectively participate in international operations, collaborations, and academic discourse.
In academia, he has been continuously teaching since 2004 courses such as Emergency Surgery, Instrumental and Functional Semeiotics, Day Surgery, Pathophysiology of Human Disease, and Surgical Methodology—primarily within the General Surgery specialization program. He also serves as tutor-assessor for Italy’s national surgical licensing examinations, guiding and evaluating future generations of surgeons.
As a prolific author, Professor Rizzo has published around 100 peer-reviewed articles in national and international journals. His research encompasses endocrine and minimally invasive surgery (especially thyroid and parathyroid), intraoperative neural monitoring, energy-based surgical technologies, departmental healthcare innovation, and narrative medicine. Beyond research and teaching, he leads humanitarian initiatives as the CEO of the HealthSud Medical Foundation, an NGO dedicated to cancer prevention, education, and clinical training in Côte d’Ivoire, reflecting his commitment to global health and medical excellence.
