Dr. Bruce M. Gans is a senior physiatrist and health-policy leader with over five decades of experience in neurorehabilitation, pediatric-to-adult transition care, spasticity management, and electrodiagnostic medicine. He served as Executive Vice President & Chief Medical Officer at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation and National Medical Director for Rehabilitation at Select Medical. He is Professor of PM&R at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and Senior Health Policy Advisor at Powers Pyles Sutter & Verville, with longstanding leadership in AAPM&R and the Association of Academic Physiatrists. His work includes development of adult programs for individuals with childhood-onset disabilities (e.g., spina bifida, cerebral palsy) and scholarship in outcomes, ethics, and rehabilitation systems of care.
Dr. Bruce M. Gans is an American physiatrist renowned for clinical leadership, education, and national health-policy work in rehabilitation medicine. After earning his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and completing PM&R residency at the University of Washington, he built distinguished academic departments and programs at Tufts, Wayne State/Detroit Medical Center, and Long Island Jewish/Northwell, before moving to New Jersey to lead at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation.
From 2003 to 2021 he served as Executive Vice President & Chief Medical Officer of Kessler Institute and National Medical Director for Rehabilitation at Select Medical, overseeing clinical quality and program development across one of the largest rehabilitation networks in the United States. He concurrently held the rank of Professor of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.
Clinically, Dr. Gans developed and directed services for adults with childhood-onset disabilities, including adult spina bifida and cerebral palsy programs, and has extensive experience in neurorehabilitation (TBI/SCI/stroke), spasticity management, and electrodiagnostic medicine. Academically, he has authored peer-reviewed publications and delivered major lectures (e.g., Walter J. Zeiter Lecture), with scholarship spanning ethics, outcomes, payment policy (e.g., “60% rule”), and rehabilitation systems.
In organized medicine, he is a past President of the American Academy of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and of the Association of Academic Physiatrists, a Life Director of the Foundation for PM&R, and Chief Policy Officer (advisor) for the American Medical Rehabilitation Providers Association. He currently serves as Senior Health Policy Advisor at Powers Pyles Sutter & Verville PC and as Lead Independent Trustee of Industrial Logistics Properties Trust.
