Prof. Giuseppe Mercante is an Italy-based ENT and head and neck surgeon with more than 25 years of experience. He serves as Section Head of Otorhinolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery and Director of the Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery Program at IRCCS Humanitas Research Hospital in Rozzano, Milan, and as Full Professor and Residency Program Director in Otorhinolaryngology at Humanitas University in Pieve Emanuele–Milan. His expertise spans thyroid and parathyroid surgery, head and neck oncology, salivary gland tumors, reconstructive surgery, minimally invasive and robotic approaches, phonosurgery, endoscopic sinus surgery, sleep apnea surgery, and pediatric ENT. He also contributes to multidisciplinary thyroid and tracheal care pathways, clinical research, and surgical education.
Prof. Giuseppe Mercante graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Bari, Italy, and completed specialist training in Otorhinolaryngology at the University of Parma, Italy. He broadened his international training through observerships at the House Ear Institute in Los Angeles, the University Hospital of Montpellier in France, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, and MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
He progressed through clinical roles at the University Hospital of Parma, Arcispedale Santa Maria Nuova in Reggio Emilia, the National Cancer Institute “Regina Elena” in Rome, and Carlo Poma Hospital in Mantova. He currently practices in Milan, Italy, as Section Head of Otorhinolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery and Director of the Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery Program at IRCCS Humanitas Research Hospital, alongside his academic leadership at Humanitas University.
His medical work focuses on thyroid and parathyroid surgery, head and neck oncologic surgery, pharyngeal and laryngeal tumors, salivary gland tumors, reconstructive surgery with free and pedicled flaps, and functional ENT procedures. His selected peer-reviewed research includes work on transoral robotic surgery, COVID-19–related smell and taste dysfunction, post-thyroidectomy hypocalcemia, and quality-of-life outcomes after tongue-base tumor surgery.
Prof. Mercante leads multidisciplinary care pathways at Humanitas, including the Thyroid Multidisciplinary Group and the Tracheal Team for tracheal disorders. He is a member of major head and neck and otorhinolaryngology societies, serves on the Executive Committee of the Asia-Pacific Society of Thyroid Surgery representing Italy, directs ENT–Head and Neck live surgery hands-on courses, and contributes to national clinical pathways and guideline work in thyroid and head and neck oncology.
