Prof. Giuseppe Mercante is a full professor of Otorhinolaryngology at Humanitas University and director of its Postgraduate Residency Program in Otorhinolaryngology. He serves as Section Head of ORL–Head & Neck Surgery at IRCCS Humanitas Research Hospital and leads the Thyroid & Parathyroid Surgery Program and Thyroid Multidisciplinary Group. Clinically, he focuses on thyroid and parathyroid surgery, head & neck oncology (pharynx/larynx), salivary gland tumors, reconstructive surgery, and functional procedures including phonosurgery, endoscopic sinus surgery, and sleep apnea surgery. He co-founded Humanitas’ “Tracheal Team” and has published extensively on head & neck oncology and endocrine surgery.

At IRCCS Humanitas Research Hospital (Milan), he is Section Head of ORL–Head & Neck Surgery and Director of the Thyroid & Parathyroid Surgery Program, leading multidisciplinary care pathways for complex endocrine and head & neck disease.
His clinical practice spans head & neck oncologic surgery (including pharyngeal/laryngeal cancers and salivary gland tumors), endocrine surgery of the thyroid and parathyroids, reconstructive surgery with free and pedicled flaps, and functional procedures encompassing laryngeal phonosurgery, endoscopic sinus surgery, and surgery for obstructive sleep apnea. He co-founded the Humanitas “Tracheal Team” to advance multidisciplinary management of tracheal disorders.
Prof. Mercante has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, including work on TORS outcomes, anosmia/ageusia in COVID-19, imaging classifications, and minimally invasive/endoscopic endocrine surgery. His research collaborations emphasize early diagnosis, personalized treatment, and quality-of-life outcomes for patients with head & neck cancer and endocrine disorders.
He regularly teaches and coordinates integrated “Head & Neck” courses at Humanitas University across medical and biomedical engineering tracks, and directs live surgery hands-on courses on thyroid/parathyroid and head & neck surgery, contributing to national and international education. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Asia-Pacific Society of Thyroid Surgery (APTS), representing Italy, and participates in consensus and guideline work in the field.
