Doctor Mohamed Elkalaawy graduated from Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, Alexandria University in 1991 and received MS degree in Surgery in 1997. He was appointed an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Surgery at Medical Research Institute, Alexandria University, Egypt and then Consultant surgeon and Lecturer and finally Associate Professor.
He received Membership of Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS) of Edinburgh and joined University College London as Senior Clinical Fellow as well as Honorary Senior Fellow in Bariatric Surgery at St. George's Healthcare NHS Trust, one of the very few weight-loss centers in the UK.
Currently Doctor Elkalaawy serves as Senior Bariatric Surgeon at UCLH Centre for Weight Loss, Metabolic and Endocrine Surgery, University College London Hospital , London, UK where together with his team have performed over 4000 new cases of bariatric procedures and managed complicated cases referred from other UK and European centers. He is also Honorary Associate Professor at Division of Surgery and Interventional Sciences at University College London, UK. He is also a Visiting Consultant Bariatric Surgeon in a number of other hospitals inside and outside UK including Mediclinic Hospital. Teaching plays an important role in Dr. Mohamed's career as he always cares to constantly pass his knowledge to younger colleagues. While serving in the Medical Research Institute, he was responsible for teaching surgery residents and assistant lecturers, as well as teaching upper GI endoscopy in the Endoscopy Unit. He is Bariatric Surgery trainer for many leading companies in the field of Obesity and Laparoscopic Surgery. He is also Senior Lecturer and internal examiner at University College London, Visiting Lecturer at Kingston- St George’s University, London and a Senior Reader and Reviewer of Surgery Chapter of Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine, Ninth Edition. He also contributed to organizing and teaching multiple courses in Basic and advanced bariatric surgeries in the UK, Europe and the Middle East. Moreover, he is as external Academic PhD examiner for St-George’s Kingston University of London. UK and an External Academic Assessor for Dubai Medical College for Girls, Dubai, UAE.
Doctor Elkalaawy is heavily involved in research where he is continuously contributing and engaged in Clinical and Lab research in the field of Obesity Metabolic and Bariatric surgery at the University of London. He has published over 40 peer reviewed publication in a range of high impact factor surgery journals.
