Prof. Sofia Markoula is a Consultant Neurologist at the University General Hospital of Ioannina and Assistant Professor of Neurology at the University of Ioannina, Ioannina, Greece. She has 29 years of experience in neurology, with focused expertise in epilepsy, seizure disorders, neurophysiology, long-term video-EEG, EEG-fMRI, stroke, pharmacogenetics, and neurogenetics. She leads specialist epilepsy, atherosclerosis, EEG, and long-term video-EEG services and has contributed to more than 70 international journal publications, 25 clinical studies, and multiple funded research programs. Her work combines complex epilepsy care, cerebrovascular medicine, and translational neurological research.
Prof. Sofia Markoula graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ioannina, Greece, where she completed neurology specialty training and earned her PhD. She undertook postdoctoral research at the Institute of Neurosurgery and the Laboratory of Medical Genetics at the same university. She received advanced fellowship training in epilepsy at the Department of Clinical and Experimental Epilepsy, National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, UCL, London, UK; in stroke medicine at Karolinska University Hospital Stroke Unit, Stockholm, Sweden; and in neurogenetics at the Cyprus Institute of Neurology, Nicosia, Cyprus.
Prof. Markoula has developed a progressive clinical and academic career at the University of Ioannina. She served as Postdoctoral Associate in the Neurology Clinic before being appointed Assistant Professor of Neurology at the Faculty of Medicine, School of Health Sciences. She was also appointed Director of Neurology Services and Head of the Epilepsy and EEG/Video-EEG Laboratory at the University General Hospital of Ioannina (PGNI), as well as Head of the Epilepsy-Atherosclerosis Clinic and Encephalography Laboratory at the University General Hospital of Athens.
Her academic output includes over 90 peer-reviewed international publications, more than 1,200 Scopus citations, and an h-index of 21. She has received 6 best research awards, secured 3 competitive research grants, collaborated with 4 international research centres, and delivered invited lectures at 92 Greek and international scientific meetings. She also leads a multicentre clinical study on psychogenic non-epileptic seizures and has completed specialised ILAE training in EEG, neuroimaging, genetics, and pharmacogenomics in epilepsy.
Prof. Markoula serves as national representative to the ILAE General Assembly and holds board memberships in major Greek and European neurology, epilepsy, neurophysiology, atherosclerosis, and rare disease societies. She remains an active research fellow at UCL, London, and collaborates with multiple European epilepsy centres.
