Dr. Ahmed Elsharkawy has been a consultant transplant hepatologist at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham since 2012. He is also an honorary senior lecturer at the University of Birmingham and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London. Also, he is the immediate past Chairman of the British Viral Hepatitis Group.

    Dr. Ahmed Elsharkawy qualified from Southampton University in 1999 with a Distinction in Biomedical Sciences and Clinical Medicine. He also obtained a Bachelor of Sciences in 1998 during which he undertook 8 months of research in the field of liver fibrosis.

    After 2 years as a gastroenterology specialist registrar, he started a Ph.D. initially at Southampton University and then at Newcastle University. His research focussed on the molecular regulation of liver fibrosis (scarring). He then was appointed as a consultant transplant hepatologist at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham in March 2012. This is the largest transplant unit in Europe undertaking more than 200 adult transplants a year.

    Dr. Elsharkawy has more than 20 years managing all forms of liver disease. These include, but are not limited to, metabolic-associated fatty liver disease, hepatitis B and C, alcoholic liver disease, autoimmune hepatitis, hemochromatosis, primary biliary cirrhosis, and primary sclerosing cholangitis.

    He has particular expertise in the management of complex viral hepatitis cases. Indeed, he is the immediate past Chairman of the British Viral Hepatitis Group and has helped to shape UK policy in this field, He is also experienced in the management of patients before, during, and after liver transplants.

    Dr. Elsharkawy is a very research-active clinician with over 50 peer-reviewed publications. He is conversant in clinical trial methodology and is involved in the latest clinical trials in many fields of liver disease.
