Prof. Germano Melissano is a leading academic and surgical expert in vascular and aortic surgery at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University and IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele. With over 12,000+ operations to his name, his main focus is complex aortic pathologies, including aneurysms and dissections, while also managing carotid, peripheral arterial, and venous disorders. He holds leadership roles in postgraduate training—director of both the Vascular Surgery Specialization School (since 2019) and the II-level Master in Aortic Surgery (since 2020) . He has published over 400 journal articles, 17 books, and 114 book chapters, with an h-index of 46. Additionally, he serves on scientific committees for major international congresses (e.g., Veith, EVC Maastricht, IMAC Cairo) and contributes to the European Society for Vascular Surgery (ESVS) guidelines
Prof. Melissano graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Florence in 1988, specialized in General Surgery at the University of Milan in 1993, and completed specialization in Vascular Surgery at the same university in 1998.
He trained through internships abroad at Baylor College of Medicine (Houston, USA), Canton Hospital (Lucerne, Switzerland), Städtische Kliniken Frankfurt am Main (Germany), and the Cleveland Clinic (Cleveland, USA) during his formative period.
Starting his career as intern (1984–1988) in Florence, he progressed to surgical resident (1988–1994), junior and senior staff surgeon (1994–1998), Deputy Chief of Vascular Surgery (1998–2013) at San Raffaele, later becoming Associate Professor (2013–2021), and Full Professor since 2021
He has performed over 12,000 vascular operations, focusing on complex aortic, carotid, peripheral arterial, and venous surgeries. He is also actively involved in educational programs and surgical technique courses internationally, and contributes heavily to European and North American vascular guidelines
