Prof. George Geroulakos, MD, FRCS, DIC, PhD, is an internationally recognized vascular surgeon with over 40 years of clinical experience and more than 270 peer-reviewed publications. He has held significant academic appointments, including Professor and Chairman of Vascular Surgery at the University of Athens and Visiting Professor at Imperial College London. His clinical expertise encompasses comprehensive arterial and venous disorders—from carotid and aortic aneurysms to complex venous insufficiency and thrombosis—employing both open and endovascular techniques. He has served as President of the Vascular Section at the Royal Society of Medicine, President of the Hellenic Vascular Society, and Councillor for Greece in the European Society for Vascular Surgery, underscoring his global leadership. Additionally, he is a seasoned examiner and educator, having held examiner roles for the Royal College of Surgeons and led numerous international training courses.
Prof. George Geroulakos is a distinguished Greek–British vascular surgeon with over four decades of clinical experience. He earned his MD from the University of Athens in 1981, followed by FRCS (Edinburgh) in 1989, and completed his PhD at St Mary’s Hospital, University of London, in 1994. He subsequently obtained a Diploma in Vascular Surgery (DIC) from Imperial College London in 1995 and achieved UK specialist registration in 1996.
He began his career as a Lecturer at St Bartholomew’s Hospital (1994–1995) before moving to the USA as a Clinical Fellow at Ohio State University (1995–1996). From 1995 to 2015, he served as a Consultant Vascular Surgeon and Senior Lecturer at Ealing, Charing Cross, and Hammersmith Hospitals, and was appointed Clinical Reader in Vascular Surgery at Imperial College London in 2012. In 2015, he became Professor and Chairman of Vascular Surgery at the University of Athens and Attikon University Hospital (2015–2023), later serving as Visiting Professor at Imperial College (2016–2023).
A prolific researcher and educator, Prof. Geroulakos has authored over 270 peer‑reviewed articles, holds an h-index of 51, and contributed 22 book chapters—serving as editor of three major textbooks including the fourth edition of Vascular Surgery: Cases, Questions and Commentaries (2018). His research specialties include arterial and venous hemodynamics, vulnerable carotid plaque, venous leg ulcers, iliac vein obstruction, intermittent pneumatic compression, and hybrid endovascular techniques.
His vast clinical and operative expertise encompasses open and endovascular management of complex arterial disease (including carotid stenosis, thoracic and abdominal aneurysms, peripheral arterial disease, diabetic foot, revascularization), venous disease (such as varicose veins, DVT, venous ulcers, May–Thurner syndrome, lymphoedema), and thoracic outlet syndrome. He remains a mentor to global surgical trainees and a sought-after speaker at international vascular conferences.
