Doctor Parkin is a consultant Urological Surgeon at University Hospitals Birmingham,Birmingham,UK. Dr. Parkin is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at University hospitals Birmingham after he was appointed in 2009. He completed his Specialist Registrar training in Urology in the West Midlands, gaining his Certificate of Completion of Training in Urology in March 3rd 2008. He has a special interest in uro-oncology and in particular laparoscopy and minimally invasive surgery.
His medical training commenced as a student at St Mary’s Hospital Medical School, Imperial College, London, where he acquired Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery in 1994 after an intercalated Bachelor of Sciences in Chemical Pathology and Clinical Pharmacology.
Following his basic surgical training in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, he undertook a period of travel that included six months working in New Zealand as a Senior House Officer in general surgery and urology. He began his urological career in Bristol, firstly as a senior house officer, then a locum registrar before spending eighteen months as a research registrar / fellow, before moving to the West Midlands for Specialist Registrar training. As a trainee in 2005, he was elected to serve as junior representative on the committee of the British Association of Urological Surgeons section of Endourology for a period of two years.
In the ten years since his appointment as consultant he has focused on uro-oncology. He also works with the Gynae-oncology unit to provide urological expertise where necessary. He has experience of almost 400 Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomies as well as over 400 laparoscopic and open Renal procedures and over 100 Cystectomy/Pelvic exenterations. In addition he has a wide experience of core urology, including rigid and flexible Ureteroscopy, Lower Urinary Tract and Scrotal Surgery.
During his career he has also sought to acquire both management and teaching skills, including Multi-Disciplinary Team lead for Urology. He has a good understanding of the importance of team working and clinical governance.
