Clinical Assistant Professor Department of Medical Genetics, Cumming School of Medicine, The University of Calgary
Canada
Dr. Ashish Marwaha is a Clinical Geneticist and Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Calgary, with extensive experience in medical genetics and immunogenetics. He holds an MBBS from Oxford and a PhD from the University of British Columbia. His expertise covers rare genetic diseases, complex immune dysregulation, and type 1 diabetes.
Dr. Marwaha has secured major research funding and co-leads projects on gene therapy and rare disease trials, supported by CIHR and JDRF. A Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (Canada) and Canadian College of Medical Geneticists, he has received awards like the CIHR Fellowship and Ontario Clinician Investigator Program funding.
Dr. Ashish Marwaha is a Clinical Geneticist and Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Medical Genetics at the University of Calgary, with 17 years of experience since graduating with an MBBS from the University of Oxford in 2006. He earned his PhD from the University of British Columbia, focusing on molecular genetics and translational medicine. Currently, Dr. Marwaha specializes in rare genetic diseases, immunogenetics, and type 1 diabetes, and is based at Alberta Children's Hospital, where he also serves as a Clinical Staff Geneticist.
Dr. Marwaha’s areas of expertise span medical genetics, clinical genomics, complex immune dysregulation, and gene therapy. His work addresses both pediatric and adult genetic disorders, with a particular focus on translating research into innovative treatments for rare diseases, such as severe combined immune deficiency (SCID) and autoinflammatory syndromes. His clinical research has advanced diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, including the use of advanced genetic screening tools and gene therapies for managing immunodeficiencies and metabolic syndromes.
An accomplished researcher, Dr. Marwaha has co-led numerous high-impact projects, including a national pediatric rare disease clinical trials network and the Canadian Population Screening for Type 1 Diabetes Research Consortium. His research is supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and other organizations, securing multimillion-dollar funding to expand rare disease research in Canada. His research findings have been published in prominent journals, contributing to significant advancements in the field of clinical genetics.
Dr. Marwaha’s achievements have been recognized through awards such as the CIHR Fellowship, Clinician Investigator Program funding, and the Radcliffe Travelling Fellowship from the University of Oxford. He is a Fellow of both the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists. Actively involved in academic mentorship, Dr. Marwaha supervises undergraduate and postgraduate students, preparing the next generation of clinical researchers in genetics and translational medicine.
