Professor Gianni D. Angelini is the British Heart Foundation Professor and Chair of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Bristol, and Director of the Bristol Heart Institute. He trained in Italy and the UK, with a background in both mechanical engineering and medicine. His research focuses on improving outcomes in coronary artery bypass grafting, particularly off-pump techniques, myocardial protection, and prevention of vein graft failure. He has led major clinical trials and served as Director of NIHR-funded research units. Professor Angelini is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and a recipient of the Italian Cavaliere Order of Merit.
Professor Gianni D. Angelini is the British Heart Foundation Professor and Chair of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Bristol, where he has also served as Director of the Bristol Heart Institute since its establishment in 1995. From 2010 to 2016, he held the position of Clinical Chair of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Head of Cardiac Surgery at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London.
He originally qualified as a mechanical engineer before earning his medical degree from the University of Siena in Italy. He completed his surgical training in Florence, Cardiff, Rotterdam, and Sheffield, combining a technical and clinical background that has shaped his pioneering approach to cardiac surgery.
Professor Angelini’s research focuses on improving outcomes in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), particularly through off-pump techniques, as well as myocardial protection, saphenous vein graft failure, and reducing the impact of surgical trauma. He has led multiple major research programs, including NIHR-funded trials and research units dedicated to cardiovascular surgery and innovation.
He has received numerous national and international honors, including the Cavaliere Order of Merit from the President of Italy in 2003, the UK Surgical Team of the Year award in 2005, and election as a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2011. In 2025, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society for Coronary Artery Surgery in recognition of his contributions to the field.
