Dr. Juan Carlos Fernandez-Miranda is an internationally recognized neurosurgeon specializing in skull base and pituitary surgery. He currently serves as Professor and Chief of the Skull Base and Pituitary Division at Stanford University School of Medicine, where he also directs the Neurosurgical Training and Innovation Center (NeuroTraIn). With over two decades of clinical, research, and academic experience in endoscopic skull base surgery, Dr. Fernandez-Miranda is a global leader in the field, contributing over 165 peer-reviewed publications. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a recipient of numerous national and international awards. His work is characterized by pioneering approaches in minimally invasive neurosurgery and advanced neuroanatomy.
Dr. Juan Carlos Fernandez-Miranda earned his medical degree from Complutense University of Madrid and completed his neurosurgical training at the University Hospital La Paz, Madrid. He pursued multiple advanced fellowships in microsurgery, cerebrovascular surgery, and skull base surgery in renowned U.S. institutions including the University of Florida, University of Virginia, and University of Pittsburgh.
He held faculty appointments at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, where he rose from Assistant to Associate Professor and led the Surgical Neuroanatomy Lab and Fiber Tractography Lab. In 2018, he joined Stanford University as a Professor of Neurosurgery and Director of the Skull Base and Pituitary Surgery Division. He also holds a courtesy professorship in Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery.
Dr. Fernandez-Miranda has significantly advanced the field of endoscopic skull base surgery, both in the operating room and through anatomical research and innovation. He has trained hundreds of surgeons through his leadership at the NeuroTraIn Center and continues to be a driving force in shaping neurosurgical education globally.
In addition to his clinical and academic roles, he serves on the editorial boards of several prestigious journals and is an active member of multiple neurosurgical societies. His research contributions span high-definition fiber tractography, skull base anatomy, and surgical technique optimization.
