Dr. Eleni Papageorgiou is an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Thessaly and a consultant ophthalmic surgeon at the University General Hospital of Larissa, Greece. Her clinical practice focuses on pediatric ophthalmology, strabismus and neuro-ophthalmology, with additional expertise in handheld pediatric ocular imaging and visual field disorders. She is a published author and contributor to international guidelines and resources, including BMJ Best Practice (Amblyopia) and multi-centre trials in amblyopia. Her research and clinical publications include work in The Lancet, Ophthalmology and the New England Journal of Medicine.
Dr. Eleni Papageorgiou is a distinguished ophthalmologist with specialization in pediatric ophthalmology, strabismus, and neuro-ophthalmology. She graduated with honors from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2002 and went on to complete her specialization in Ophthalmology in Larissa. She further obtained a Master’s degree in Molecular Medicine and earned a Doctor of Natural Sciences degree (Dr. rer. nat.) from the University of Tübingen, Germany, focusing her research on visual field defects using virtual reality tools.
She undertook advanced training in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Neuro-Ophthalmology at the University of Leicester under the supervision of Prof. Gottlob, gaining substantial surgical expertise and clinical experience in nystagmus and strabismus.
In addition to her clinical practice, Dr. Papageorgiou has been an active educator. She has taught ophthalmology to medical students and residents since 2011, participating in several undergraduate and postgraduate programs across Greek universities. She currently holds the title of Assistant Professor at the University of Thessaly.
Dr. Papageorgiou has an outstanding record in research, having authored over 80 peer-reviewed articles and contributed to multiple book chapters. Her clinical and research work has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Carl Liebermeister Prize and the Bielschowsky Award. She has also served as a senior editor and reviewer for prestigious international journals in ophthalmology.
She actively participates in European and international research networks, including EU-ROP, EuPatch, and the Global Burden of Disease Collaborator Network. Her research interests span from retinal diseases in children to neuro-ophthalmologic rehabilitation and the impact of visual impairment on daily functioning.
