Professor Jakob R. Passweg is a leading Swiss haematologist with more than 35 years of clinical and academic experience, particularly in haematopoietic stem-cell transplantation and bone-marrow failure syndromes. He currently serves as Head of Haematology at the University Hospital Basel and has held chair roles in major European transplantation organisations. His research focuses on improving transplantation outcomes, immune interventions and long-term follow-up care for patients undergoing stem cell transplantation. He has published extensively (>100 papers) and is broadly recognised internationally for his contributions to the field.
Prof. Jakob R. Passweg (born June 21, 1959 in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland) studied medicine at the University of Bern and subsequently obtained a Master of Science in Epidemiology from the Medical College of Wisconsin (USA). After board certification in internal medicine and hematology in Switzerland (1994), he progressed through senior clinical roles in the Hematology Division of University Hospital Basel and served as Chair of Hematology Division at the University Hospitals of Geneva beginning in 2005.
In his current role as Chair of Haematology at University Hospital Basel, Prof. Passweg leads clinical, translational and basic research programmes in haematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (HSCT), marrow failure, graft-versus-host disease (GvHD), and adoptive immunotherapy. His group focuses on improving transplantation outcomes through donor/recipient selection, immune intervention, and long-term follow-up of transplant survivors.
Prof. Passweg has served in leadership roles in the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) and other international organisations; in 2024,he received the EBMT Distinguished Merit Award. With over 100 publications and a high h-index, his academic output spans stem-cell transplantation, leukemia, aplastic anaemia and transplant immunotherapy.
His clinical portfolio includes the treatment of both malignant and non-malignant haematological disorders, with a focus on complex cases requiring stem-cell transplantation. He is invited internationally as a speaker, working-group lead and expert reviewer, combining clinical leadership with academic impact.
