Prof. Abdur Rahman Shakir is one of the leading hematologists and oncologists in the United States, with over twenty years of experience in cancer treatment and clinical research. He currently serves as the Director of the Sarah Bush Lincoln Regional Cancer Center in Illinois and is an Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois, Chicago, USA. He has extensive experience in brain, lung, and breast tumors, as well as complex tumors and stem cell transplantation. He has participated in numerous clinical trials and has published prominent international research in the field of oncology.
Prof. Abdur Rahman Shakir was born in Chicago, Illinois, USA, and earned his M.D. from Sri Ramachandra Medical College in India, an institution affiliated with Harvard Medical International. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the Hospital of Cincinnati, USA, followed by a Neuro-Oncology fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, USA, and a Hematology-Oncology fellowship at the University of Illinois at Chicago, USA.
During his training, Prof. Abdur Rahman Shakir served as Chief Fellow in Hematology and Oncology at the University of Illinois, USA, where he later joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor. He currently serves as the Director of the Sarah Bush Lincoln Regional Cancer Center, Illinois, USA, where he has played a pivotal role in expanding oncology services, strengthening multidisciplinary cancer care, and advancing access to clinical trials in both solid and hematologic malignancies.
Prof. Shakir’s clinical expertise spans a broad spectrum of cancers, including brain tumors, lung cancer, breast cancer, lymphoma, leukemia, and disorders requiring stem cell transplantation. His research interests lie in molecular oncology, with contributions to targeted therapy for ALK-rearranged non–small-cell lung cancer and emerging chemotherapeutic combinations for metastatic disease.
Over the course of his career, Prof. Shakir has been recognized for excellence in teaching, research, and patient care. He is also an active participant in public education, frequently appearing on programs such as PBS’s Being Well, where he discusses new cancer treatments, research developments, and the evolving landscape of clinical trials.
