Dr. Abdur R. Shakir is a distinguished American Hematologist and Medical Oncologist with more than two decades of clinical, academic, and leadership experience. He currently serves as the Director of the Sarah Bush Lincoln Regional Cancer Center in Illinois and as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Shakir has established a reputation for delivering advanced, evidence-based cancer care, with specialized expertise in brain tumors, thoracic malignancies, breast cancer, and complex hematologic disorders.
Throughout his career, he has held key leadership roles in oncology program development, multidisciplinary care, and clinical research initiatives. He has been an investigator on numerous clinical trials, contributed to international oncology publications, and remains an active member of major professional societies, including ASCO, ASH, and ASTRO. Dr. Shakir is widely respected for his commitment to medical excellence, compassionate patient care, and advancing cancer treatment through research and innovation.
Dr. Abdur R. Shakir was born in Chicago, Illinois, and earned his M.D. from Sri Ramachandra Medical College in India, an institution affiliated with Harvard Medical International. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the Jewish Hospital of Cincinnati, followed by a Neuro-Oncology fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and a Hematology-Oncology fellowship at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
During his training, Dr. Shakir served as Chief Fellow in Hematology and Oncology at the University of Illinois, where he later joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor. He currently serves as the Director of the Sarah Bush Lincoln Regional Cancer Center, where he has played a pivotal role in expanding oncology services, strengthening multidisciplinary cancer care, and advancing access to clinical trials in both solid and hematologic malignancies.
Dr. Shakir’s clinical expertise spans a broad spectrum of cancers, including brain tumors, lung cancer, breast cancer, lymphoma, leukemia, and disorders requiring stem cell transplantation. His research interests lie in molecular oncology, with contributions to targeted therapy for ALK-rearranged non–small-cell lung cancer and emerging chemotherapeutic combinations for metastatic disease.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Shakir has been recognized for excellence in teaching, research, and patient care. He is also an active participant in public education, frequently appearing on programs such as PBS’s Being Well, where he discusses new cancer treatments, research developments, and the evolving landscape of clinical trials.
