Prof. Michael J. Birrer, MD, PhD, has over 42 years of experience. He is Vice Chancellor at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and Director of the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute. Prof. Birrer also serves as Professor of Internal Medicine and Biochemistry & Molecular Biology. He previously directed the Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Alabama and held leadership roles at Massachusetts General Hospital and the National Cancer Institute, specializing in gynecologic oncology.
He earned his BS in Biology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1976, followed by an MD and PhD from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1982. Prof. Birrer completed his postdoctoral training at Massachusetts General Hospital and the National Cancer Institute, focusing on medical oncology. He has also mentored numerous students, contributing to oncology education.
Prof. Birrer’s research focuses on gynecologic cancers, particularly ovarian cancer. His work emphasizes genomics, early detection, and identifying new therapeutic targets. He has led numerous studies funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense, advancing the understanding of cancer biology.
He has received numerous awards, including the Claudia Cohen Research Prize and the Foundation for Women’s Cancer Public Service Award.
