Prof. Francis Munier is a Swiss ophthalmic oncologist and geneticist with over 30 years of specialized experience in retinoblastoma and ocular oncology. He serves as former Head of Ocular Oncology, Pathology & Genetics at Jules Gonin Eye Hospital in Lausanne and is a full Professor of Ophthalmology. Board-certified in both Ophthalmology and Medical Genetics, he pioneered targeted treatments for retinoblastoma. A leading voice in pediatric ocular oncology, he has authored nearly 200 publications and holds key leadership roles in international ocular oncology societies. His expertise uniquely integrates clinical innovation, genetics, and compassionate patient care.
Prof. Francis L. Munier earned his Swiss Federal Diploma in Medicine and MD at the University of Lausanne in Lausanne, Switzerland. He trained at Jules-Gonin Eye Hospital and the Division of Medical Genetics in Lausanne, then completed fellowship training in pediatric ophthalmology and ocular oncology at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, University of Southern California, USA.
At Jules-Gonin Eye Hospital in Lausanne, Switzerland, he progressed through assistant physician, chief resident, associate physician, and physician-adjunct roles before leading the Ocular Oncology, Pathology and Ocular Genetics pole for more than seven years. Since stepping down from leadership, he has continued as Consultant for Retinoblastoma at Jules-Gonin Eye Hospital and holds the title Professor Emeritus of Ophthalmology at the University of Lausanne.
His work helped establish conservative eye-salvage treatment strategies for retinoblastoma, including intra-arterial, intravitreal, and intracameral chemotherapy. His research also contributed to the molecular characterization of inherited eye disorders, including TGFBI-related corneal dystrophies and EFEMP1-associated macular dystrophy.
Prof. Munier has contributed to international medical leadership through the International Society of Genetic Eye Disorders and Retinoblastoma, the International Society of Ocular Oncology, the European Retinoblastoma Group, and the American Joint Committee on Cancer TNM classification for retinoblastoma. He has also served on the editorial board of Ophthalmic Genetics and received the Retina Suisse Lifetime Award in Bern, Switzerland.
